🚀Empowering Innovators: The Journey of Four Entrepreneurs and the Role of EIT Health🎢
We often talk about the combined might and power of our community, but you may find yourself wanting to hear some concrete examples of exactly how our ecosystem supports and catapults members to success. Well, look no further…. here are the stories of four innovators and the path they took through the expansive landscape of EIT Health.
It’s no secret that in recent years Europe has become a global hotspot for start-ups, particularly in the tech and health sectors. With over €47.3 billion in investments secured by European start-ups in the first half of 2024 alone, the continent has shown its remarkable entrepreneurial potential. With that comes significant challenges, entrepreneurs must navigate complex regulatory landscapes, secure funding in competitive environments, and address talent shortages to achieve scalable success.
Steering through these challenges and barriers can be an overwhelming, disheartening and sometimes isolating experience for entrepreneurs. This is why EIT Health and the Innovators Community can make a difference, Let’s delve into the journeys of four innovators who are part of our dynamic community. Their careers have been catalysed by EIT Health, showcasing how our initiatives can shape the path from ideation to scaling.
Starting Out: Students as Innovators
Mateusz Dworak and Martyna Jakubowska began their entrepreneurial journeys with a shared passion for addressing systemic challenges in diabetes care. Mateusz and Martyna met and found inspiration at EIT Health’s 2023 Digital Medical Devices Summer School.
The programme equipped them with essential skills in healthcare innovation and entrepreneurship. It also provided the perfect environment to collaborate and further develop the AutoCast system, a groundbreaking solution for diabetic foot care aimed at reducing amputations caused by diabetes. EIT Health’s hands-on training and mentorship enabled the team to refine their solution, setting them on a path toward clinical trials.
Building Up: Transforming Concept into Start-Ups
For Dr. Bárbara Oliveira, entrepreneurship offered a way to positively impact the lives of cancer patients. As Co-Founder and CCO of Luminate Medical, Bárbara and her team are on a mission to enhance the quality of life for cancer patients by preventing the side effects of chemotherapy.
The turning point for Luminate Medical came when they participated in EIT Health’s accelerator programmes in 2022 and 2023. These intensive training initiatives gave them access to invaluable mentorship, pan-EU networks and a platform to pitch their solutions to Europe’s top investors and industry leaders. Through EIT Health, Bárbara and her team honed their business strategies and expanded their network, leading to a series of significant milestones:
- A €5M investment round in 2022.
- Funding from the Disruptive Technologies Innovation Fund.
- $15M in Series A funding to prepare for a U.S. launch in 2025.
Luminate Medical’s success story highlights how our ecosystem can amplify the potential of start-ups and support them to raise funds.
Growing Big: Scaling for wider impact
Lenka Röhryová gives us a great example of how EIT Health supports entrepreneurs at the scale-up stage. As a co-founder of Vitadio, Lenka has been instrumental in developing a cutting-edge digital therapeutic platform for Type 2 diabetes. Vitadio’s app leverages AI technology to deliver personalised health guidance, making it the first digital therapy with DiGA status— which enables reimbursement under Germany’s healthcare system.
EIT Health played a crucial role in Vitadio’s success, offering the team tailored support to navigate Europe’s healthcare market and scale their operations. Programmes like DiGinnovation helped Vitadio accelerate the adoption of their solution, while the Regulatory Pathways to Market Bootcamp prepared them to meet Europe’s complex regulatory requirements.
